From the Oxford Dictionary: WHITE SUPREMACY (noun) - the belief that white people are better than other races and should be in power RELIGION (noun) - a particular interest or influence that is very important in your life
By definition alone, when taken with the political landscape of the United states, it is easy to claim that white supremacy is, indeed, a religion practiced by millions of people in the country alone. But is this definition of religion over simplified? For at least 100 years sociology theorists have sought to define what religion is and what it means for individual people as well as communities. These theorists have rarely fully agreed what elements, and the extent of which they are used or practiced, constitutes religion and religious practice. There are approximately 1.91 billion religions in the world of which white supremacy, when viewed through the theories of Emile Durkheim, is one.
